Transformation (GME/T)

Our Mission
GME Transformation (GME/T)
advances the social mission of medical education by reforming GME funding, accreditation, and governance to build a sustainable physician workforce that meets the evolving needs of patients and communities.

Our Vision
A well-distributed, well-resourced physician workforce that ensures equitable access to high-quality care across all specialties and regions.

The Call for Reform
Despite decades of calls for change, incremental efforts to reform GME have failed. Payment for GME remains complex, arbitrary, and entrenched, resulting in a physician workforce poorly distributed across specialty and geography. In response to this call, the mission of GME Transformation (GME/T), formerly known as the GME Initiative, is to reform GME and fulfill its essential commitment to both the public and the learners who will graduate from this system.
Established in 2010 as a grassroots coalition of stakeholders spanning nine states, the GME Initiative played a pivotal role in recommending the evaluation of GME financing. These efforts focused on providing education, engaging with policymakers, and setting in motion the culminating evaluation and 2014 National Academies report, Graduate Medical Education that Meets the Nation’s Health Needs.
